Ekadashi — the eleventh lunar day — occurs twice each month, once during the waxing Moon (Shukla Paksha) and once during the waning Moon (Krishna Paksha).

Why Ekadashi Is So Powerful

According to Vedic texts, the Moon reaches a position on Ekadashi where its gravitational pull has a maximum effect on the water content of the human body.

How to Observe Ekadashi

Complete Fast (Nirjala): No food, no water — extremely powerful

Partial Fast (Phalahar): Only fruits, milk, nuts

Grain-Free Fast: Avoid all grains

Spiritual practices to add:

  • Wake before 4 AM and take a purifying bath
  • Light a lamp and offer Tulsi leaves to Lord Vishnu
  • Chant Vishnu Sahasranama or read Bhagavad Gita
  • The 26 Ekadashis

There are 26 Ekadashis in a year, each with its own name and specific benefit. Nirjala Ekadashi in June is the most powerful — fasting here is said to equal all 26 Ekadashis combined.
